Today we head to Meknes, the Ismailia capital, then continue to the holy city of Moulay Driss via the ruins of Volubilis, the Roman City and back to Fez.Meknes is named after a Berber tribe (Miknasa). It has many interesting historical and cultural monuments to name but a few: The Dar El Makhzen palace which contains a 2 kilometer long corridor formed by 2 large walls. It was once Moulay Ismaïl's palace.The Bab Mansour gate was named after the architect who built it in 1732. Dar El Beida is a 19th-century palace built by sultan Mohammed ben Abdallah. The Royal Military Academy current resides here.Volubilis, a fertile land once prospered from olive growing, which led to the creation of fine structures with mosaic floors. The Romans, Latinised Christians, and Islamic settlement all took turns inhabiting this area. Volubilis was abandoned by the 11th century. Most of the local population relocated to the new town of Moulay Idriss Zerhoun, 3 miles away. The ruins remained until they were damaged by an earthquake during the mid 18th century, and further more when Moroccans seeked stones to build Meknes. Some of the structures were restored after the French ruled Morocco. The city is named after the shape of the mountain tops above the town, which look like two goat horns (chaoua). This city is known for its buildings painted in shades of blue. Situated on the Rif mountains just inland from Tangier and Tetouan, the city was discovered in 1471. It was a small fortress by Moulay Ali Ben Moussa Ben Rached El Alami.Chefchouen is a popular location for its native handcrafts such as wool garments and woven blankets, which are not available anywhere else in Morocco. You will be driving through Middle Atlas Mountains to Azrou then to Ain Louh passing through The Cèdre Gouraud Forest is located to the north of Azrou, where one of the sub-populations of the Barbary Macaque is found. In addition to its rich biodiversity symbolized by the famous cedar forest there are the butterflies which are unique in the world. Tonight you will spend a night at Ain Louh.2 hours walking. Gite, lunch and dinner included DAY 6: Ain Louh - Zaouiate IfraneToday no vehicles are needed as you will walk all the way from Ain Louh through the beautiful landscapes of the valley of Bou Harch to Zaouiate Ifrane where you will meet up with local people and spend a night. Zaouiate Ifrane is a small Berber village about 25km outside of Azrou sits under a dramatic and extremely unique geological feature, a 200 foot travertine plateau provides a backdrop of caves, hanging plants and waterfalls. 5 hours walking. Gite, breakfast, lunch and dinner included DAY 7: Zaouiate - Ouiuane LakeYou will walk today towards the water sources which feed the Zaouiate Ifrane waterfalls. You will enjoy climbing through the middle of herds of sheep. A very Peaceful and undestroyed nature and environment. You will end up your walk at the edge of the Lake of Ouiouane where you will spend the night. 5 hours walking. Camping, breakfast, lunch and dinner included. DAY 8: Lake Ouianine – Oum ErrabieToday you will continue your walk to River Oum Errabie through the breath-taking landscapes of gorges of the River Fella. A long walk but will be most adventurous. Once arrived and depends on the weather, you may enjoy a beautiful and calm bath on the Oum Errabie waterfalls. Camping, breakfast, lunch and dinner included. DAY 9: Oum Errabie - FesAfter enjoying your local breakfast in the most scenic nature, you will meet again with you driver, who will be more than happy to drive you back to your Riad in Fes.
